When the news unfurled by the public that SM Prime Holdings acquired a wide area located at the South Road Properties (SRP), many of us were excited!
Aside from the most renowned Sinulog festival, amazing tourist spots, notable landmarks and many to mention exciting places in Cebu — Cebuano’s are much pleased by one of the biggest projects imparted in our time. We are very proud to say that this is the biggest mall in Cebu — the SM Seaside City Cebu.
Since the construction a few years back, I’m sure Cebuano’s have been eager for this mall’s opening. Every time we passed by SRP back then, I usually catch myself checking the on-going construction site.
SM is redefining the way Cebuano’s live, work and play, starting a lifestyle destination with everything else we wish to have in a community. In the coming years will soon rise the residential condominiums, hotels, a convention and exhibition center, a school and a hospital but right now, we are more than appreciative for this massive endeavor of SM here in the heart of Cebu. I heard an Ocean Park will open in the complex in 2017.
The long wait finally ended on November 27, 2015 when SM Seaside City opened their doors to all shoppers, mall goers, guests and travelers from all walks of life. Cebuanos, of course, were the first ones to check and experience the entire state-of-the-art, urban center. A remarkable location set at the waterfront of the new South Road Properties development in Cebu — proudly the Philippines second largest city and a major tourism hub in the country.
I’ve been waiting to visit SM Seaside. I did miss a lot of the exciting events during the malls opening and even days past but with my pursuance and eagerness to visit the mall, I finally managed to visit SM Seaside with an officemate.
My SM Seaside Experience at the Chapel. Photo above is me facing towards the chapel.
One of the many reasons I love to visit SM Seaside City Cebu is how I can start my week right with a contemplative Sunday by paying a visit at San Pedro Calungsod Chapel, right beside the SM Seaside mall.
My friend and I headed first at the San Pedro Calungsod Chapel — this place should not be missed and is worth allocating your precious time when you happen to visit SM Seaside City Cebu.
We were able to roam around the divine vicinity of the church/chapel.
The location possesses great solemnity, sanctity and solidarity. A holy place where you could attend mass at your most favorable time even made more convenient by SM. You can focus your mind for a period of time by visiting the chapel which is very accessible, situated at the back of the mall.
I have great desire to pay this particular chapel a visit, perceiving myself as the kind of person who needs to go someplace religious where I can meditate peacefully, offer a prayer, a solemn request to our Lord Almighty and an interceding prayer to Saint Pedro Calungsod. To be honest I’m a person living in a life of so-called perplexed situation. To some, we’d label it just like a downcast individual, still depressed, tormented and hoping for the time all things fall into place. Its such a relief and just so timely, to have been able to visit the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod.
To give you a little background, the chapel was built in honor of the first patron saint in Cebu, the second in the Philippines, Saint Pedro Calungsod. That said, it is strongly believed that the point of origin of the clan of Calungsod is in Cebu, with historical research finding their highest concentration in Ginatilan, Cebu.
Anyhow, here are some of the photos I’ve taken during my visit. Hope these give you an idea how the chapel looks like.
The image above is the location way out through SM Seaside City Cebu. Cars or private vehicle may get off or have you fetched right at the same spot. The place is refreshingly unique and harmonious.
The two images above are the different angles in nearby entrance. You can have your vehicles park on either side. If you cant find space for your parking in front of the chapel, don’t worry because there is ample space located at the back of the chapel.
We met Ms. Anther of SM Seaside’s admin and she gave us the authority to roam around the chapel.
The Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod was the first structure to open at the SM Seaside Complex — just as the Shrine of Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life paved the way for development of the SM Mall of Asia complex.
This chapel was dedicated on November 29, 2012 in the year of faith, on the 3rd day of the Triduum of the National Thanksgiving Celebration for the Canonization of Pedro Calungsod with the honorable blessing of his most Excellency Rev. Jose S. Palma D.D., the Archbishop of Cebu.
The first fiesta celebration will coincide with the anniversary of the canonization of the Visayan Saint on Oct. 21.
Here are the crucified Jesus Christ, Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph the carpenter in life-sized sacred images or replica at the main altar. The replica of Senior Sto. Nino is situated at the side of the altar.
The image above is the replica of Saint Pedro Calungsod at SM Seaside which is situated at left side of the altar situated atop of love offering box. I recall that one of the memorable parts of my experience way back in 2012 during my visit in Ginatilan, was the replica of Saint Pedro Calungsod.
Saint Pedro Calungsod in latin called Petrus Calungsod; in Italian called Pietro Calungsod (July 21, 1654-April 2, 1672), also known as Peter Calungsod that according to research, the Cebu icon saint was a Roman Catholic Filipino migrant, sacristan and missionary catechist who along with the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom in Guam for their missionary work in 1672.

Share your blessings. Love offering boxes at both side of San Pedro Calungsod replica. At the top are envelopes for offering and a prayer guide in a plaque.
The great interiors of this chapel can help you have an intimate talk with our Lord Almighty God. Sunday masses also comes in different convenient schedules.
This modernized structures design was inspired by the overall complex architecture and was built perfectly as homage to our spiritual roots. The San Pedro Calungsod Chapel stands as a sanctuary of stone, sand and glass as a holy place.
The chapel is unique that boasts of 100 walls, each standing at different heights and with varying widths. The walls face astoundingly in one direction so that when viewed on one side it appears solid and yet transparent on the other side. The church pews are spaced and arranged in such a way it complements the church goers.
Within these walls holds a Baptistery, a Childrens room, an Adoration chapel, the fourteen (14) Stations of the Cross and of different prayer niches. A multi-purpose hall, the comfort rooms and the parish office is located below the chapel.
This portal is the doorway through the altar located at the left wing of chapel.
This location can be visited when you go through the left side wing of the chapel. Behind these walls are the different stations of the cross.
This pocket garden bamboo makes this chapel even more relaxing with a calm view. This location is found outside of the altar conjoint with the walls.
The ADORATION CHAPEL located also at the left wing of the chapel, the interior just as impressive. You could really find solitude here.
This is also a good place to offer solemn prayer and contemplation right before heading out to go to SM Seaside City Cebu.
SM Seaside Mall is apparent in this location. Impressively very nice view while smelling the fresh air.
The 14 Stations of the Cross are located at the left and right wing of the chapel. This is the part where Jesus is nailed to the Cross.
This is located at the left wing of the chapel. There’s a stairway going through the basement and car park.
These walls in stunning contemporary design.
Another set of walls.
The Baptistery – located at the left side of the chapel across the main doorway. It was around 5pm Wednesday during my visit andthere was an on-going baptism ceremony at that time.
The Childrens room – located at the right side of the chapel across the main doorway. Well, maybe this place is ideal for playful kids wherein you can teach them how to pray.
The Multi-Purpose Hall is ideal for various church functions like Wedding receptions and other important events. This function hall is located below the Chapel.
The restrooms located at the basement. At the corner is Parish office center.
This is the Women’s restroom.
Available parking space at the front of chapel.
The road leads to Mambaling Extension road and to the Cebu South Coastal Road.
